Isaan (or Isan) is not a province but a collection of provinces in the North Eastern part of Thailand. Isaan borders the Mekong river. The city of Nonh Khai in Isaan is a stones throw from the capital of Laos, Vientiane on the other side of the river. The people of Isaan speak a different dialect from the rest of Thailand and have a unique culture which has many similarities with the culture of Laos. The main occupation of the people of Isaan is agriculture, whilst the locals are poor most families own some land of their own.
